What is M2TS?
A .m2ts file is a Sony high definition video file type. M2TS files are raw AVCHD videos recorded using Sony's camcorders, such as the HDR-SR(xx)series models. Panasonic, Canon and other brands of AVCHD camcorders also record in m2ts format. Currently, m2ts files can be played using the Picture Motion Browser, which is an application video player provided with Sony AVCHD camcorders.

M2ts files can also be played with ALLPlayer, Mplayer, Windows Media Player, BSplayer, VLC and other media players if there is a codec for DVD playing installed. The file type .m2ts is not always automatically associated with the player, so it may be necessary to open it from the player.

M2ts files contain a transport stream BDAV MPEG-2. Each stream is its own file and file names are of the form XXXXX.M2TS (where "XXXXX" is date and time stamp of when the video clip was recorded).

The M2TS file format is one of the three mandatory supported codecs (MPEG-2, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, and SMPTE VC-1) used on Blu-ray discs.

M2TS files can also be played on Sony PlayStation 3s and Sony Bravia TVs supporting playback of AVCHD.

What is AVI?
Audio Video Interleave, known by its acronym AVI, is a multimedia container format introduced by Microsoft in November 1992 as part of its Video for Windows technology. AVI files can contain both audio and video data in a file container that allows synchronous audio-with-video playback. Like the DVD video format, AVI files support multiple streaming audio and video, although these features are seldom used. Most AVI files also use the file format extensions developed by the Matrox OpenDML group in February 1996. These files are supported by Microsoft, and are unofficially called "AVI 2.0".

There is slight overhead when used with popular MPEG-4 codecs (Xvid and DivX, for example), increasing file size more than necessary. The AVI container has no native support for modern MPEG-4 features like B-Frames. Hacks are sometimes used to enable modern MPEG-4 features and subtitles, however, this is the source of playback incompatibilities.
